With so many stunning options to choose from, this location guide outlines the best Washington DC Engagement Photo Locations.

There are so many different kinds of locations in DC to choose from for your engagement session! Each location has a different feel, background, level busy-ness, light, color and overall vibe. This makes it so hard for there to be a “best location”, because it depends on if you would rather be in a garden, in a museum, in a sentimental spot, etc. With so many stunning options to choose from, I wanted to put together this location guide for couples to help you find the best engagement photo location for you.

So for this blog post, I have divided best locations up into the following categories: Architectural and Historic/European Inspired Locations, Monumental/Iconic DC Locations, Urban/Chic Locations, Rooftops, Gardens, Cityscapes, and then a few unique out of the box locations.

National Gallery of Art DC Photos: Bridal Portraits with Shaby

DC Elopement at National Gallery of Art and Cafe Riggs: Mark and Cindy

These national gallery of art dc photos are so special because of the unique story of Shaby and Josh. You might remember Shaby and Josh from their engagement session here on the blog a few months ago. For their engagement session we were in Old Town Alexandria for water views and an inner city scape with cobblestone. Shaby and Josh added a bridal session into their collection to get ever more photos of Shaby in all her glam. We chose the National Gallery of Art as the perfect location for these bridal portraits because of its historic feel and classical backdrop. The light in the National Gallery of Art is also great for highlighting skin tones and wedding dress detail. What I also love about this museum is that if you go during the week, there aren’t too many people around and so we are able to get mostly clean backgrounds. Shaby’s dress and vision for her wedding is everything timeless and classic with a mix of tradition and sophistication, making an art museum the perfect setting to showcase her as a bride.

The national gallery of art has many exhibitions to choose from for photos as well, we stuck the the structures of the museum -columns and stairwells to ensure the focal point of the photos was Shaby. Shaby and Josh are planning their wedding for this fall 2022, and it is going to all take place at Hotel Dupont in Washington DC. What does their life aside from wedding planning look like? They are both currently working from our home. They break up the day by having a late breakfast, watching an episode of Columbo or Murder She Wrote, and motivate each other to work out when work is all done. In the evenings, they actually go to the movies about 1-2 per week. I also think it is so cool that Shaby and Josh also visit book stores and record stores once a week. They enjoy exploring new restaurants and planning future trips, cooking and music. When they aren’t out exploring, they love to stay in for dinner and a movie. I am so excited about these national gallery of art dc photos and can’t wait to share their wedding with you soon as well!

I am so excited to share these state Arboretum of Virginia engagement photos! The State Arboretum of Virginia located in Boyce, Virginia is one of the best locations for engagement photos if you are looking for all things gardens, open fields, and full trees. You can get a lot of variety just by walking around, from the building to the gravel roads to the greenhouse area. It is perfect for a spring or summer engagement session and I am so glad Brittany and Dom chose it for their session!

What makes this engagement session extra special is the story of Brittany and Dominic. Brittany and Dom actually met at their first jobs at the Fairfax Ice Arena. Dominic was a skate guard and Brittany worked in the box office selling tickets. Fast forward to today and they are engagement and planning their wedding for this fall! Dominic actually proposed at Enchanted in DC. They were skating on a rink at Nats Park. It was during Christmas time so it was beautifully decorated and very special. When I asked them what they perfect date night looked like, they told me it would be visiting a new area, trying a new restaurant or just sitting at home, renting a movie and enjoying each other’s company. They are getting married in Luray this fall, so a summer engagement session worked out perfectly so they have variety in their galleries and also a little bit of practice in before the wedding. Brittany wore the most beautiful red dress and Dominic wore a navy shirt and khaki pants which paired beautifully with the back drops of the Arboretum. We also lucked out with the most amazing light and weather. I can’t wait for their wedding this fall!

Old Town Alexandria was the perfect spot for Virginia and Coy’s engagement photos and I am so excited to share this Old town photoshoot with you. Coy and Virginia met for their first date last May at a coffee shop in Alexandria, Virginia—just a few minutes away from George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate. They walked to a small park, and enjoyed coffee and conversation in what seemed like a random gazebo. If you know Coy and Virginia, you won’t be surprised that they talked about crypto and Zimbabwe. In short, it seemed like a smashing success! However, Coy had to cut it off after an hour and a half to volunteer at church, and Virginia wondered if he was making up an excuse to leave…especially after he mentioned that he would “be out of town for a few weeks.” Any such doubts were quickly erased as Coy proved to be an excellent date-planner and Virginia was quickly swept off her feet. They fell in love while enjoying an Italian dinner in Dupont Circle, strolling around DC’s Tidal Basin, exploring Mount Vernon (during the great Cicada emerging of 2021), and visiting nearby Hunt Country. Most importantly, they fell in love through sharing their faith.

They’ve expanded each other’s horizons: Coy now enjoys Virginia’s favorite BBC series Father Brown; Virginia now enjoys Coy’s favorite cartoon Adventure Time. Coy now appreciates Virginia’s wide range of musical taste-including Lionel Richie and John Denver-and Virginia now tolerates Coy’s obsession with bluegrass. Truly a perfect match!

After securing blessings from the McNallys, the stage was set for Coy’s proposal during a March weekend. On a Friday evening, Virginia awaited in anticipation for a grand gesture while Coy sat in a Jiffy Lube waiting room texting her amusing videos of ducks he found on the internet. After Virginia wondered if this was some sort of trick…Coy revealed that there were no big plans for the evening. Virginia’s patience paid off the following morning. Coy planned an intricate scavenger hunt spread out over three locations and with clues delivered by Virginia’s dear friends Olivia and Hillary. At the end of the hunt, Virginia found Coy waiting for her at the coffee shop where they first met. They walked in the snow to the gazebo that once seemed random but now holds great significance, and having lost all feelings in his toes and fingers, Coy asked Virginia to marry him. The next morning, they attended a worship service at Trinity Episcopal Church in Upperville, Virginia—the site of their future marriage ceremony. It was truly a perfect match!

Julie and Brad’s Fairmont DC wedding is one I am so excited to bring to the portfolio. Julie and Brad started the day getting ready at the exquisite Fairmont in the heart of Washington DC. Julie had her hair and makeup done and had a relaxing, quaint morning with a close friend, the perfect calm and intimate environment before a big evening. As. Julie was getting ready, it actually started to snow, and we headed onto the balcony for some portraits of her in the snow. As soon as Julie and Brad were ready, we headed out to the church for a traditional Catholic ceremony.

Julie and Brad exited the church with ribbon streamers surrounding them, and we all headed to back to Fairmont. The reception was ready with the most classic and timeless colors, and florals to complement. The cocktail hour was in the hall by the lobby, where guests enjoyed wine and hors d’oeuvres before heading in to find their seat for dinner. Julie and Brad had the most special entrance, followed by dinner service and the most emotional speeches. After the speeches, they shared their First Dance followed by two parent dances and the dance floor opened up. One of the best things about Fairmont is the shape of the reception banquet hall, and the fact that the dance floor is actually in the center of the room and elevated. This allows for guests who do not want to dance to still feel a part of the space and event, and close by. Many guests including Julie’s grandmother sat and watched those dancing while enjoying coffee. We ended the night with Julie and Brad cutting their cake, and dancing away on the dance floor.

Olivia and Nick’s Great Marsh Estate wedding was one of the most special weddings to date! The day started with Olivia getting ready in the bridal suite upstairs, where she got her hair and make up done surrounded by all her bridesmaids. Nick was in the basement getting ready with all the groomsmen, putting on tuxedos, and drinking their special drink of the day. As soon as they were ready we did a first look with the bridesmaids, followed by a first look with Olivia and her dad. Then we went outside for Brad and Olivia’s first look to the left of the ceremony site by the hedges.

Once we did the first look and their portraits we headed out to the gravel road for the bridal party photos and lots of candids. The theme of this wedding was super colorful and playful. For the ceremony and reception, Olivia and Nick hired live music and a live band. The ceremony was in on the line right outside great marsh estate and then they had a cocktail hour in front of the estate. After cocktail hour we are headed to the barn for a candle lit and light blue and pink pastel colored reception. The reception started with the bridal party entrance followed by the first dance and then a lot of speeches. One of the best things about Great Marsh Estate is the barn size, Olivia and Nick had an entire head table and still had plenty of room for all of their guests. It is also very easy for all guests to see the person speaking from anywhere in the reception space.

After all the speeches Olivia and Nick started their dinner service and then also had some fun snacks and desserts outside on the patio along with a fire pit. They ended the night with the lights dimmed and everyone on the dance floor dancing and singing along to the live band.

Alex and Zach lucked out with the sunset for their photos at the Kennedy Center earlier this month! The Kennedy Center is one of the best places for engagement photos because of it’s open space and natural light. Anywhere there is water or white walls nearby, there will be even and great light, and the Kennedy Center has both! What I also love about the space is how easy it is to crop out other people from the photos generally, since there are so many walls and pieces to use for framing. The Kennedy Center is a great background if you are looking for a modern take on DC, with a little bit of trendy and fun thrown in. The key with the Kennedy Center, and most engagement shoots, is actually in the outfits you choose.

I helped Alex and Zach pick outfits that were timeless and classic -white and blue or white and black never fails, and this gives space for the light and backgrounds to have more color without being overwhelming! What I also love about the Kennedy Center is that no matter which direction you shoot in, you will have green lighting. I always like to start with the light on the couple for the first half, and then switch to a backlit evening once the sunset is in full swing, which you can see down below. That backlit light with a little wind makes for the most movement and natural looking photos! I loved this session and working with Alex and Zach, and I am so excited to add this special sunset to the portfolio.

Mark and Cindy’s DC elopement at the National Gallery of Art and Cafe Riggs is one I am so excited to share with you! From the moment we began discussing this elopement, I know it was going to be so special. We considered all the best spots in DC to uber around to for their photos and elopement, and ended up picking the best spots for the most variety! The day started at Cafe Riggs, where Cindy and Mark had rooms to get ready in, shared their First Look in the lobby. Followed by their First Look, Cindy and Mark signed their marriage papers and we headed to the courthouse!

Then, they were officially official! To celebrate we took an Uber to the National Gallery of Art, which was the perfect backdrop for a classic dc elopement and variety in color and warmth. We walked around the museum together looking around and taking portraits. Cindy carried her bouquet with her, and many people around them cheered and clapped when they saw these two. I’m so glad we went outside the National Gallery of Art for photos also, because we came into the best light ever outside! The best thing about monumental stone in DC is that it natural reflects the best light for skin tones, and makes for a beautiful and simplistic foreground. After their portraits we returned to Cafe Riggs where the vendor team was all set up and ready for the most precious candlelit reception. Mark and Cindy did everything right and shared the perfect elopement in DC! I’m so grateful to have been a part of such a special day, and can’t wait for their reception this summer to celebrate and document more of their love again!

Ana and and Chris’s Oxon Hill Manor Wedding is one I am so excited to share with you! Earlier this year I posted a bit about their love story and their unique DC engagement photos at Jack Rose, so if you haven’t already, make sure to check it out. They had their engagement session indoors at a cozy and chic bar in DC, a place they love to go! I love when couples pick a location that is sentimental and meaningful to them, it makes the photos that much more special! For their day at Oxon Hill Manor, every detail had so much thought and all the work was worth it!

We started the day actually at an AirBNB in Old Town Alexandria, where Ana and the bridesmaids got their hair and makeup done. I was able to find a great amount of light upstairs for Ana’s detail photos! We then headed to Oxon Hill where the groomsmen got ready in the groomsmen suite, and the girls headed to the bridal suite to continue getting ready. I was able to spend a lot of time with each of them because we had made such a relaxed timeline together, and I’m so glad we did. Ana and Chris shared their First Look in a private setting in the garden, as the violinist practiced and prepared for the ceremony. Their portraits right after was definitely my favorite part of their wedding day, we lucked out with just the amount of shade and sun for those perfect, creamy skin tones. Ana and Chris photograph so well together, and are naturals in front of the camera. The bridal party then joined us for photos and then we all got ready for the ceremony. What I actually love about Oxon Hill Manor’s ceremony setting is that there is a long aisle for a long entrance. This makes for so much opportunity for photos! I love that the backdrop of the ceremony is rather simplistic and minimal, that draws the eye to Ana and Chris. They went on to have the best reception and sparkler exit! OH, and they also had an afterparty at MGM!

Tess and Austin’s King Family Vineyards wedding in Charlottesville, Virginia is one I will cherish for the rest of my career. Tess and I actually originally connected on Instagram, where she found my website and reached out to me and we scheduled a call. From the moment we joined the call, I knew I wanted to be part of this special day they were planning.

We started the day with Tess actually getting ready at her parent’s house, which is just down the road from King. All the girls were hanging out and getting their hair and makeup done while drinking mimosa’s and playing music. It was a relaxing and peaceful morning, and their hair looked SO. GOOD. From there we all went over to King for Tess to put her dress on -only the girls traveled by limo :). One of my favorite photos from this day is actually Tess walking outside of her house in her bridal PJs. When we got to King, Austin and the groomsmen were hanging out in the grooms suite, while the girls went into the bridal suite. We got set up for 3 First Looks: one with the bridesmaids, one with Tess’s dad, and of course, the last for Tess and Austin. Their First Look was private with all of their family watching from the windows :). It was one of my favorites for sure. What made this day amazing I should mention is how thoughtful planned out Tess and Austin planned their timeline. We had plenty of time and I was able to get the best photos because the day was planned entirely around light, and we never felt rushed. The ceremony followed by a few family and bridal party photos, and a wonderful reception. Their reception was FUN with so many things to do! Tess and Austin even booked a donut truck, had a backdrop, a DJ, as well as a s’mores station outside and open bar. The guests were all having a blast and there were so many unique things to do all evening. Tess and Austin opted no to do an exit and to stay on the dance floor which was so fun, so we closed the night with getting a few photos with them at the donut truck -and that might be my new favorite way to recommend you end your wedding! 🙂

Chelsea and Ryan’s Brittland Manor wedding was one of my favorites to date and I am so excited to share it with you!  The day started with Chelsea getting ready in the bridal suite, and Ryan getting ready in the waterfront house at the end of the property. All the girls in the bridal party and family got their makeup done on the first floor, and then headed up to one of the beautiful rooms at the Estates to get dressed in. One thing I loved the most about this wedding day was that Chelsea opted to do a First Look with her bridesmaids, something I think adds a layer of depth to your photos and heartfelt moments to your day. Ryan and his groomsmen also had a ton of fun playing music, drinking, and hanging out on the dock. Ryan’s dad even had his boat parked out on the water!

Ryan and Chelsea opted to share a First Look together in front of the Estate. It was a private and intimate moment that made for the beautiful start to the celebration of their marriage. After their First Look, we were able to do bridal party photos in no rush, and Chelsea’s dad walked up which made for a sweet impromptu First Look with her dad, too! Guests arrived and they said their vows under the most precious Oak tree. Guests watched and were captured with emotion as Chelsea and Ryan recited their own handwritten vows. Some of my favorite parts of this wedding were: Chelsea walking into the ceremony with her dad, and the cocktail hour which was surrounding the pool!  Being near water actually made for the best lighting! For their reception, they had it tented with lots of attention to detail and a vibrant floral component that really brought the space together. I am so honored to have played a part in telling this love story that is just getting started!

I am so excited to share this Salamander Resort wedding with you! Ghadeer and Eric got married on a cozy morning in Middleburg, Virginia at sunrise. They booked the most classic and gorgeous suite to get ready in. Ghadeer had her hair and makeup done professionally in the suite, while Eric went downstairs on a coffee run, read the newspaper, and then put his suit and tie on in the living room. What I love about the Salamander Resort is that their suites are huge and have enough space to get a lot of variety in the photos! While Ghadeer got ready, we photographed the dress, perfume, and all the jewelry using the soft light coming through the windows before the sun came up. We then had Eric step onto the front porch for their first look.

Ghadeer came out onto the balcony, tapped Eric on the shoulder, and the emotion captured us all. They spent a few moments chatting amongst themselves, complimenting each other, and feeling so much joy and peace in this moment that was just about the two of them. Once they were ready, we walking down and outside onto the lawn with their officiant, where we captured their ceremony. After they exchanged their vows and rings, we walked around the venue for different poses and angles. Ghadeer wore the most beautiful fur, and it added so much style and dimension to their photos! I always recommend fur for winter weddings, it never fails to make for a cozy, warm, and timeless look!

The Salamander is one of our favorite venues for weddings because of the ample amount of light that comes in through the suites, as well as the variety we are able to get by walking around the lawn. One of my favorite spots to actually use for photos are the balconies connected to the suites, and the study downstairs. Both make for the perfect backdrop for timeless and classic images that keep you focused on the story in front of you.

Shelby and Red are the sweetest and their stylish Washington DC engagement photos were amazing to photograph! The two have been together since August 2017 after meeting at Reda’s uncle’s restaurant, where they were both working. It took them over a month to realize that they were more than friends but a kiss in Arlington sealed their fate. Now, these two wonderful people are planning their Briar Patch Bed and Breakfast wedding day to bring their families together!

Reda and Shelby chose to do their engagement portraits around Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. It’s absolutely beautiful in the fall and wound up being the perfect upscale look for their portraits. Honestly, I haven’t met two more stylish people than these two. Just look at those outfits! They both have such a great, relaxed city loving vibe to them and I loved spending the afternoon with them!During our session, I got to hear more about Reda’s proposal for Shelby. It was SO sweet. While visiting Marrakech and his family, he surprised Shelby completely with his proposal! When she said yes, they were able to have a huge engagement session with his family and friends from Morocco! It was so sweet to hear how he worked hard to surprise her with something special and memorable.

I cannot wait to see these two again in April for their Briar Patch Bed and Breakfast wedding! They are planning to have a large bridal party, a red old fashioned mustang, all the spring colored flowers, their dog, and so much more and it’s going to be amazing!

Ana and Chris’s DC Engagement Photos at Jack Rose was so special, and it’s even more special when you know the story of Ana and Chris. Their indoor engagement photos in dc was such a unique session! Ana and Chris actually met online! They messaged back and forth for a few weeks before going on their first date. For their first date, they went to a bar on New Years Day in 2015 to watch college football over beers in Chinatown. Chris walked Ana home and proceeded to beat her in chess (which she does not know how to play). Ana’s lobby had a chess set so they played until an Uber surcharge went down for Chris to go home. Fast forward to today, and they have been together 5 years, are engaged, and are planning a wedding for October 2021.

Chris proposed on Christmas Eve 2019 on his parent’s balcony after everyone had gone home after Christmas dinner. It was 35 years after Chris’ dad proposed to his mom. However, it was not on purpose. Chris wanted to propose the day before at Dallas’ Reunion Tower but the moment was not right. On the evening he proposed, his parents had bottles of Mumm’s champagne ready to pop just in case it happened over the holidays. This is the same brand of champagne they had for their proposal story.

I LOVE that these two to chose to have their engagement session at a location that is unique to them! They decided on Jack Rose Dining Saloon in Washington, D.C. , one of their favorite spots! We are so appreciative of Jack Rose being willing to work with us! They let us take photos on the main floor, and then, we went up to the rooftop for the second half where we got some gorgeous views of the sunset streaming in!
These two are planning to have their Oxon Hill Manor Wedding a neo-Georgian house of 49 rooms, located at Forest Heights, Prince George’s County, Maryland. It was built in 1929, and consists of a two-story main block of Flemish bond brick and a northern wing. For Ana and Chris, though, who love gambling, its the perfect location because it is near a casino, where they plan to take their after party!

Ariell and Mark are married and their gorgeous fall Athenaeum Alexandria Wedding wedding was classic, stylish, and full of love. As two people who met and have spent more of their relationship in Northern Virginia and DC, the Athenaeum was a great pick for their wedding venue. This gallery building is historic (which they both loved) and accommodated their intimate wedding day perfectly.

Both Ariell and Mark got ready for their Alexandria wedding day at the George of Old Town. Ariell and her girls had the most gorgeous pale green robes to prepare in. They were so excited to be celebrating Ariell all morning! After Ariell got into her gorgeous trumpeted wedding gown, she met Mark for a first look by the fireplace. The emotion in the air between them both was palpable as they showed off their wedding attire and enjoyed a few quiet moments together. Seriously, one reason I love first looks is just the chance for my couples to have a moment ALONE on their wedding day!

When they were ready to go back to their wedding party, we headed out to the historic cobblestone streets for their portraits with the bridesmaids and groomsmen. It was a GREAT spot for some truly old town feeling portraits. I can’t get enough of them! Not long after, we headed to the Athenaeum for their outdoor ceremony. With COVID hovering over the entire day, I know that Ariell and Mark felt a little worried about how their day would feel to their guests. But, I think the worries were for no reason. Everyone had a great time celebrating Ariell and Mark as they said “I do”. When their ceremony was complete, they had a small reception inside the Athenaeum.

Congratulations again, Ariell and Mark. Your Athenaeum wedding was classic from start to finish. I LOVED the fall colors you picked and your beautiful garden ceremony. Your love story is SO special and I’m thrilled I could be there with you to celebrate.

Jasmine and Zach’s Potomac Point Winery wedding was the most beautiful of weddings and I am so excited to share a few snippets of their special day with you. It all began with Jasmine getting ready in the bridal suite at Potomac Point, which had quite a few rooms. Her girls were making mimosas and getting their hair and makeup done and having the best time while listening to music! The energy in the room was infectious, and I just bounced around for awhile getting the best candids. Meanwhile, Zach was getting ready downstairs in the wine cellar with his groomsmen. The space down there made for an intimate setting and the guys were drinking bottles of wine and chatting while waiting for the day to get started.

Potomac Point Winery Wedding in Stafford, Virginia

Jasmine and Zach chose a special spot for their First Look at the winery -in front of the doors to the wine cellar. This made for a beautiful tuscan inspired background for their First Look. Jasmine came down the long stairwell, and walked across the concrete pour to her husband to be. Zach’s reaction was everything every bride wants from her groom on the wedding day. We documented this as quietly as possible, trying to give these two all the time in the world to soak up their precious moment. We then took lots of bride and groom portraits and bridal party portraits. My favorite part of their wedding was their personal vows at the ceremony, though. Jasmine spoke of her ideas about love what forever engraved in the hearts of guests and I teared up myself documenting her words. Zach is everything to Jasmine, and Jasmine is everything to Zach. Their love is undeniable, and this start to their marriage was nothing shy of beautiful. I am so grateful to have been part of this special day, and wish the best for you two- Zach and Jasmine.

Choosing the best location for your photos really important! I always encourage clients to pick a location that is meaningful and fitting to you. First, here is my Bucket List of locations in the D.C. Maryland, and Virginia area. These are locations I have never been to, but always wanted to photograph at!
