Elevate Your Wedding Photography: Flat Lay Styling Guide

I’m so excited to share this FULL flat lay styling guide with you! As a wedding photographer, I understand the challenges of standing out in a competitive industry. One powerful way to set yourself apart and capture the essence of a couple’s special day is by perfecting your flat lay photography skills. In today’s blog post, I’ll share my tips and tricks that have helped me book high-end weddings and enhance the storytelling aspect of my wedding galleries through beautiful and meaningful flat lays.

The Importance of Flat Lays

Flat lays aren’t just about showcasing random wedding details; they’re a vital part of telling the story of a couple’s big day. These carefully curated compositions include items like rings, jewelry, invitations, and personal letters, all of which hold deep sentimental value. When done right, flat lays evoke emotions and become as powerful as capturing a first look moment. They are an essential narrative element that enhances the overall wedding experience for both the couple and the viewers of your work.

Mastering Lighting and Backgrounds To create stunning flat lays, start with excellent lighting. You have two main options: natural light and artificial light. My preference is always natural light, which often involves utilizing window light.

Pay attention to how the window light casts shadows on your flat lay and aim to have those shadows towards the back for a more pleasing result. When it comes to backgrounds, consider three options: plain, painted, or designed backdrops.

Each choice complements different wedding styles, from minimalistic to whimsical or intricately designed weddings. Matching your backdrop to the wedding’s aesthetic helps tie everything together.

Perfecting Composition and Styling

When photographing a flat lay, you’re typically positioned at the front of it, making it challenging to visualize the final image.

Ensure that your aspect ratio aligns with the final crop, creating a cohesive look. Finally, you’ll need various items to style the flat lay effectively. I’ve curated a list of affordable items on my Amazon storefront to elevate your compositions and make them look beautiful and luxurious.
