How to Photograph an Engagement Session: Behind the Scenes, Posing and Settings

Creating stunning wedding photography requires more than just a camera; it demands a keen understanding of natural posing techniques. In today’s video I want to take you along with me to a recent engagement session!

Why Posing Matters

As wedding photographers, one of our most important jobs isn’t just about creating beautiful photos—it’s about creating an environment where our clients feel at ease. A couple’s comfort in front of the camera can make all the difference in their experience and the final images.

Making couples comfortable starts with connection. Before we even pick up the camera, it’s essential to get to know the couple. Ask them about their story, their dynamic, and their favorite ways to spend time together. These conversations not only help you understand how to capture their unique essence but also create a rapport that eases any initial nervousness. During the session, clear direction and a touch of humor go a long way. I love using natural prompts—like asking couples to whisper something funny to each other or walk hand-in-hand while focusing on their partner. These prompts create authentic moments that look and feel genuine. Remember, it’s not about forcing a pose but guiding them toward actions that allow their personalities to shine through.

Body language is another important cue to watch for. If a couple seems stiff or unsure, don’t be afraid to pause, reset, and reassure them. Sometimes stepping away from the pose to chat or show them a preview of the images can work wonders in building confidence. Remember, your energy sets the tone. If you’re relaxed and enthusiastic, they’ll follow suit.

In this particular session, I focused on helping the couple feel like they were just enjoying a fun date together, with me there to document it. You’ll see in the video how I guide them with gentle prompts, create moments of laughter, and ensure they feel like the stars of the day. Behind the scenes, it’s about balancing professionalism with genuine care and attention.

I hope this video gives you a glimpse into how I approach my sessions and inspires you to think about ways to connect with your own clients. By prioritizing their comfort and building trust, you can create images that are not only beautiful but deeply meaningful for the couples you work with. Let me know if you have any questions or want to dive deeper into these techniques—I’d love to hear from you!

Tips for Natural & Candid Poses

  1. Start with Warm-Up Poses
Simple prompts like holding hands or a forehead touch can ease your clients into the session.
  2. Use Connection Prompts
Encourage couples to talk to each other or recall their first date. This helps capture genuine smiles and laughter.
  3. Embrace Movement
Have your clients walk, twirl, or play a mini-game of tag. Movement brings energy and authenticity.
  4. Incorporate Editorial Angles
Adjusting hands, feet, or even posture can create stunning magazine-worthy shots.
  5. Don’t Forget the Details
Close-ups of hands, smiles, and shared glances add depth to the story.
